Overview
IPL 2026 begins as RCB face SRH at Chinnaswamy tonight. Simultaneously the US-Iran war has crashed the Sensex 1,690 points, spiked gold to ₹1.48 lakh per 10g, and PM Modi has inaugurated Jewar Airport. Three massive stories on one Saturday.
IPL 2026: RCB vs SRH opens the season
The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League officially started today, March 28, at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who ended their 18-year wait for a title in 2025, opened their title defence against Sunrisers Hyderabad at 7:30 PM IST. The TATA IPL 2026 runs 74 matches across 13 venues until May 31, with playoffs scheduled from May 26 to the final on May 31.
KKR face a severe injury crisis before their opener against MI tomorrow — Harshit Rana is out, Akash Deep is ruled out with a lower back stress reaction for up to 12 weeks, and Matheesha Pathirana is expected only by mid-April. Angkrish Raghuvanshi hit a 55-ball century in an intra-squad match at Eden Gardens, raising hopes for the KKR batting lineup. The TATA Group renewed title sponsorship at ₹2,500 crore for five years, and JioStar holds broadcast rights with Star Sports on satellite and JioHotstar for digital streaming.
US-Iran war: what it means for India's economy
The US-Israel military campaign against Iran, which began on February 28, 2026, has fundamentally altered India's economic environment. The IRGC launched its 83rd wave of Operation True Promise 4 on March 27, targeting American and Israeli military installations. The conflict has disrupted the Strait of Hormuz — the world's most critical oil chokepoint — and the consequences are felt in every Indian household today.
The Sensex crashed 1,690 points on Friday, closing below 73,600 — a fall of over 2.25 percent. The Nifty dropped to 22,820. Over ₹8 lakh crore in market capitalisation was wiped out in a single session, with Reliance Industries and IndiGo among the biggest losers. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced excise duty cuts on petrol and diesel to shield Indian consumers, keeping petrol at ₹103.50 and diesel at ₹90.03 in Delhi despite global crude prices surging past USD 105 per barrel.
Gold at record highs — what investors should know
Gold has surged to record levels in India amid the West Asia conflict. On MCX, gold for the April contract was trading above ₹1,44,690 per 10 grams, while retail 24K gold stands at approximately ₹14,809 per gram — about ₹1,48,090 per 10 grams. International spot gold crossed USD 5,345 per ounce. Silver also spiked, trading around ₹2,45,000 per kilogram. The rupee weakened to ₹94.78 against the USD.
Analysts expect gold to remain elevated as long as the Middle East conflict continues. The safe-haven buying trend is global — investors worldwide are shifting into precious metals amid uncertainty. For Indian investors, gold Sovereign Bonds and Gold ETFs offer government-backed exposure without the making charges of physical jewellery.
PM Modi inaugurates Jewar airport — flights in 45 days
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase I of the Noida International Airport at Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar at noon today. The airport — developed at a cost of ₹11,200 crore under a 40-year PPP with Zurich Airport International AG — has an initial capacity of 12 million passengers per year, scalable to 70 MPPA by 2040. Commercial flight operations are expected within 45 to 60 days, initially on domestic routes.
The airport features a 3,900-metre runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft, a multi-modal cargo hub, and modern navigation systems. It will serve as NCR's second international gateway after IGI Delhi, relieving congestion for passengers from Noida, Greater Noida, Agra, and western Uttar Pradesh. CM Yogi Adityanath estimated the airport will generate around ₹1 lakh crore in economic value for UP.
Iran writes "Thank You India" on missiles — Nokia fires 14,000
In a symbolic move, Iran's Aerospace Force wrote messages of gratitude to "the people of India" on missiles before launch, with footage released by the Iranian Consulate General in Mumbai. PM Modi spoke with President Trump — with Elon Musk reportedly on the call — and underlined the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open. The Zoji La avalanche on the Srinagar-Leh highway killed at least 7 people, with dozens of vehicles buried under snow.
Nokia announced plans to potentially lay off up to 14,000 employees globally, with Indian offices among those facing restructuring. This adds to a broader 2025-2026 pattern of global tech layoffs impacting India. Meanwhile the RBI's ₹8 lakh crore bond calendar, released as markets were already under pressure, added to bearish sentiment heading into the weekend. The week ahead will be dominated by IPL action, market recovery hopes, and developments in the West Asia conflict.
